The Bankcard Industry in India-need for the emergence of Bankcard  and Technology  Services Division (BCT) of Advanced Micronic Devices ltd. (AMDL)

Cards and Acceptance Scenario:

From the barter system to credit cards of 1950s as a payment mechanism is a
fascinating saga. Credit cards came to
India in the year 1980, although Diners already made its presence in India by 1964.  The types of cards include credit card, charge
card, debit card, ATM card, check guarantee card, pre-paid card, stored value card (otherwise known as Smart cards).
The potential card market in India is over 160
million.  However, presently only about 120000+ merchant establishments-mostly in
10 big cities are equipped to accept cards by electronic means with an estimated
50,000 merchants  still using the zip-zap  imprinter machines to accept the cards.

Same is the scenario in most of the developing countries and emerging markets.

Electronic cards:

A debit card is a flat-written card either signature based or PIN based.  It is mandatory to swipe it on an Electronic Draft Capture (EDC) machine to provide “safety” and “Security” to the transaction and protect the card holder’s money. To underline these protections and ensure risk-free electronic transactions, world over concerted efforts have been made to migrate to chip cards.  The pre-paid card has a preset amount has been downloaded onto the card for use in an offline pre-approved environment such as the one encountered in a Electronic Purse scenario where there is no  on line communication with the card holder's account.

Thus all the three types of products promoted by banks i.e. the credit, debit and pre-paid cards can be used on the terminal such as the one designed, developed and manufactured by AMDL.

The mission of AMDL BCT is to proliferate wide spread card acceptance by converting all the  merchants both paper based and non-EMV  into EMV and electronic thus minimizing  the risk of the Banks and card institutions.

EMV Migration

The Bankcard Associations-VISA and MASTER CARD have been leading the card Issuing and Acquiring Banks to incorporate more security measures in their systems.  The global EMV migration plan by EMVco is a step in the direction of increasing security levels.
The immediate tasks faced by card acquiring banks are migration to EMV 2000 level by dates specified by EMVco.  This is a major task for countries already having a mature population of EDC/EFT terminals and ATMs and most of them have to be replaced by
2005.

EMV Certification

As per the migration calendar of the associates, it is mandatory for any new card acceptance terminal to be deployed to be certified by EMV for both level I and Level II.
In fact, it is a professional milestone and proud moment for AMDL as it has completed both Level I and Level II certification of its terminal.  It’s not out of place that AMDL
is the FIRST and, so far, The ONLY EMV certified EDC terminal manufactured in  INDIA.

SmartPOS:

AMDL is the first terminal vendor  in the world to have successfully implemented the Visa’s  innovative ‘Smart Pos’ Solution.
